5 Simple Steps to Help You Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions!

Do you want to change an undesired trait or behavior? Do you want to accomplish a personal goal this year or otherwise improve your life? Do you find it hard to keep your New Year’s Resolutions each year? Well, I have 5 simple steps to help you make + keep your New Years Resolutions this year!

According to Wikipedia, in a 2014 report, 35% of the participants who failed their New Year’s Resolutions admitted they had unrealistic goals. Therefore, Step 1 is to keep your Resolutions realistic.

Winning a million dollars is a nice Resolution, haha, but you have to admit that it is somewhat unrealistic. Let’s try to stick with Resolutions that give you a 50/50 chance of obtaining.

Here are some examples of more realistic New Years Resolutions:

  • Reduce the amount of time you use your phone.
  • Go outside everyday, for at least 30 minutes.
  • Go hiking or take a nice stroll in your neighborhood park once a month.

New Years Resolutions don’t have to be some big, huge thing. They can be simple and beautiful. The most important thing is to keep them realistic.

According to the same 2014 report I mentioned above, one in 10 respondents claimed they made too many resolutions. Therefore, Step 2 is to reduce the amount of Resolutions you make! Easy peasy!

This year I am making three Resolutions! One large, one medium, and one small. My theory is that even if I am not able to accomplish all three, but I do accomplish at least one, then I won’t feel like a complete failure.

My large Resolution is to open my Harvest Moon shop. A real, brick + mortar style shop. It is my biggest Resolution because it will require the most planning and work.

My medium Resolution is to read 26 books for pleasure. I tend to keep my nose stuck in reference type books (herb books) most of the time, so I want to make myself enjoy a book for pleasure at least once every two weeks. It is very realistic, but something that I will have to remind myself to do.

My small Resolution is to limit the amount of time I am on my phone each day. Recently, I have found myself putting down my phone more often, especially on the weekends, and I have found that I really enjoy it! So I feel this will definitely be an easy Resolution to keep.

With my one large + one medium + one small Resolution plan, you should be able to keep at least one Resolution this year or you may be able to accomplish all three!

You may be asking yourself, “What is a Resolutions Board?” right about now, and that’s okay. To answer that question, for those of you who are asking, a Resolutions Board is very similar to a Dream Board or Vision Board!

I feel that this step is one of the most important steps because it will help bring your New Year Resolutions to life!

You can make it with a simple piece of printer paper or go all out and use some poster board. You can be as artsy/crafty as you wish or keep it simple, there is no wrong or right way to do this. The most important thing is that you make one.

According to the same 2014 report I mentioned above, 33% of the participants didn’t keep track of their progress. Therefore, Steps 3 + 4 were designed to help you keep track of your progress!

As you can see, my New Year’s Resolutions Boards are not, by any means, fancy. They are actually quite simple. I just used printer paper + markers to create mine, but they are still effective.

By creating baby steps under each goal, I will be able to keep track of my progress and mark off each task once it has been completed or write down each book I have read.

Step 5 is the last of my steps, but definitely not the least!

According to the same 2014 report I mentioned above, 23% of the participants totally forgot about their New Year’s Resolutions! So, I would say this last step is super important.

All you have to do is hang your New Year’s Resolutions Board(s) in a place where you will see it everyday! May I suggest the refrigerator? How about the door to your bedroom? Wherever you choose, this will help you remember your New Year’s Resolutions for the year and help you stay accountable.
