My Journey to Quit Smoking: Week 5

Week 5: October 17th – 23rd (Days 29 – 35)

Day 29: Wednesday, October 17th, 2018

Today was a good day, I only smoked my pipe 7 times. I still have some congestion in my chest, leftovers from the virus I had, so I am trying not to smoke as much.

I also feel that I am finally getting some will power! When I have cravings now, I just tell myself “no, you do not need to smoke” and it’s working. Not every time, obviously, but it’s working!

This week I plan to pull out the herbs I received from Mountain Rose Herbs last weekend and make some teas and maybe some lozenges too! I am curious to see how well these herbs work for me. It’s almost time to throw away the tobacco, so I need to figure out what works and what doesn’t when it comes to controlling my cravings.

Day 30: Thursday, October 18th, 2018

Today was a good day! I didn’t get a chance to work with my herbs today, but I’m sure I will find time to do that tomorrow.

My youngest niece came over for a visit this afternoon. She is full of so much energy, so she kept us busy for a while!

I smoked my pipe 7 times today, but I’m hoping to go down on that number tomorrow. I feel like I’m ready to just quit 100%, but my cravings tell me otherwise. Hopefully soon I can find a way to control those cravings.

Day 31: Friday, October 19th, 2018

Today was a good day, but I still didn’t get a chance to sit down and enjoy any herbal teas. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to.

I smoked my pipe 7 times today and I am still on track with my goals. Tomorrow I will go down to 6 times a day, but I am going to shoot for 5 times!

I’ve been writing out the steps I need to complete in order to open a little herb shop here in my tiny Oklahoma town. I’m hoping to open shop in January, but if it happens sooner that would be awesome too! Once it’s open, I’ll figure out how to open a website so I can offer my products to all of y’all! I’m so excited!

Day 32: Saturday, October 20th, 2018

Today was a good day. I smoked my pipe 7 times and I’m still on track with my goals. We didn’t really do much today, so there isn’t much to talk about.

Day 33: Sunday, October 21st, 2018

Today was my 40th birthday! Woot! Woot!

Some women get depressed when they turn 40, but for me it’s just another day. I am going to fully embrace this phase of my life.

My sweet husband and awesome brother planned a surprise birthday for me today! They cooked up some amazing food and invited my whole family. My mom + dad, my siblings, my nieces, and my son’s girlfriend were all in one place…that made my heart happy! ❤️

I smoked my pipe 6 times today, so I’m going down on the amount of tobacco I smoke! Yay!

Day 34: Monday, October 22nd, 2018

Today I actually kept track of how many times I filled my pipe! I filled it 3 times and puffed on it 5 times. I also bummed a few cigarettes from my mom. So I smoked about 6 cigarettes today!

We didn’t really do much today, it was the normal homeschool + chores + housework kind of day. We did go to my parents’ house this evening though. We had a little watch party for the Houston Trump Rally. It was fun spending another day with my family. I always treasure days I’m able to spend time with them.

Day 35: Tuesday, October 23rd, 2018

Today was another normal day, but this evening I had my younger sister + her husband + her little girl over for supper. We played a quick game of Ten Thousand after supper and then I did a live video on my Facebook page.

I smoked my pipe 6 times again today, the last day of week 5. Hopefully next week I can get down to 4 times a day, or totally quit altogether!

This week was pretty successful, but I know I can get down to only smoking my pipe 3 times a day! Slowly but surely I’ll get there. I’m so thankful I haven’t had any real bad nicotine craving symptoms yet (like anger, moodiness, etc.).

This next week I plan to open up my box of herbs and try different things that will help me with my cravings. I hope y’all have a great week! God bless! ❤️

  1. Have you ever tried cold turkey? When I quit, it seemed to work the best. I found cutting back, I always found reasons to rationalize more and it seemed to prolong suffering. Sounds like you are having more success with the pipe though.

If you haven’t tried cold turkey, give it a whirl. The physical withdrawal is only really shitty for the first three days. After that, it is all in your head. That was the hardest part for me…convincing myself I didn’t need the nicotine. All the best!

    • No I haven’t. I am a stay at home momma to three kiddos and we homeschool, so I am literally with them 24/7. I am trying to avoid withdrawal symptoms by weaning myself off the nicotine. 😊

      • Totally fair! I found the incremental withdrawal of cutting back almost as bad as nothing but you got to do what works for you in your situation.

I do remember being an emotional wreck during the first month of no nicotine. Add kids to the mix and I get why you are weaning yourself…

All the best and it does get easier. I haven’t smoked or vaped nicotine regularly (minus a few days about once a year) since April 2016. I still love parts of smoking but on the whole don’t miss it. I love cigarettes but have more trouble leaving them alone. I also try to smoke my pipe if I want tobacco as I’m less likely to want to do it regularly.

I did want to ask how you liked the herbal mix you were substituting before?

      • Thank you so much! Your information is so helpful. I haven’t tried the Herbal mix with the pipe, but I will today and I’ll let you know. I didn’t really like it in cigarette form, but I think I may in pipe form. It has such a lovely smell, very earthy.
