Let me begin with a brief history of Cynthia Ulrich Tobias, which I found on her website http://cynthiatobias.com.
“Cynthia Tobias has a successful background that includes over 25 years of private practice, 8 years of teaching high school, and 6 years in law enforcement. She knows the importance of embracing the unique, useful, and necessary traits of a strong-willed person. Cynthia’s insight and expertise has been recognized by parents, teachers, and law enforcement professionals across the nation and around the globe.”
Someday, in the near future, I plan to hear her speak about Learning Styles or her book, The Way They Learn. I would love to pick her brain and find out more. She is very knowledgable and insightful!
In the beginning of her book she goes over the Gregorc Model of Learning Styles, which comes from the research of Dr. Anthony F. Gregorc. She even has a test that you & your children can take that is very useful. I loved learning about all the different learning styles and figuring out what learning styles my munchkins and I are. I’m sure this will help tremendously with our homeschool.
In chapter 7 she talks about Environmental Preferences, based on the research by Kenneth and Rita Dunn. She goes into great detail about where children study, how quiet (or loud) it should be when they’re studying, the lighting ( bright, medium, dim, natural), hot or cold temperatures, eating and drinking while studying, and etc. I found this chapter most helpful!
In this book she introduces you to five different learning styles models to “help you understand that each person is a complex and unique combination of natural strengths and preferences.”
So I actually found the whole book most helpful! Especially since I’m a homeschooling mom with three completely different children whom I teach!
I’m truly thankful that God called me to homeschool. I know, without a doubt, that now I’m even more prepared to customize their education with the knowledge I received from this wonderful book! ❤️
